Kentucky's Noah Thompson wins 'American Idol' 2022

The Bluegrass State has waited for more than 20 years for a person to be crowned "American Idol" champion - and now it has happened.

In Season 20, an unseen construction worker from Louisa, Kentucky, won the long-running vocal competition.

During the finale, he sang alongside other finalists HunterGirl and Leah Marlene for the "American Idol" crown,

He wore a suit on stage for the first time (and only second time in his life) as he performed Rihanna's "Stay."

Additionally, Thompson performed a powerful duet with the legendary music legend Melissa Etheridge, his debut single,

The band also performed "One Day Tonight," a Bruce Springsteen hit.

In the past also, "American Idol" has made several previously unknown performers into superstars, like Kelly Clarkson (Season One) and Carrie Underwood (Season Four).

A co-worker and friend of Thompson's in Louisa pushed Thompson, who had no prior musical training or performance experience, to try out for the show.

With his distinctive country style, Thompson surmounted self-doubt, extreme nerves, and even COVID-19 as he performed each week of the competition.
