Top Moments From Nikolas Cruz's First Day of Sentencing

The first day of Parkland mass killer Nikolas Cruz's conviction was emotional for the families of the shooting victims and survivors.

Cruz pled guilty to 17 counts of first-degree murder last fall.

Last month, jurors were sworn in to decide whether Cruz should be sentenced to death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The penalty phase of his case could last four months.

Cruz's conviction hearing started on Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the Broward County Courthouse.

Some of the victims' families were photographed arriving at the court before the trial started.

The prosecution made its opening statement first.

As Cruz sat with his head bowed and surrounded by his defense team, lead prosecutor Michael Satz was seen doodling his team's opening remarks.

Satz described a video he claims Cruz shot days before the shooting.
